Lettuce is by far the most popular of the leaf salad vegetables, and belongs to the same family as chicory and endive. It has a long history in the kitchen with images on ancient Egyptian tombstones dating from 4500 BC. The Romans ate a lot of lettuce and by the 1st century AD, nine varieties were described including one with red leaves. The choice of lettuce from Franchi Sementi is amazing with “butterhead”(lettuga a cappuccio), “crisphead” (letugga batavia), “long leaved” (letugga romana), “loose leaved” and cutting varieties (letugga da taglio). Colour ranges from dark to light green, often with red fringes, to red. There are also lettuce in the organic section. In English called lamb’s lettuce, corn salad or mache, this old French variety has good flavour. A delightful salad green that will only do well if grown when cold. Direct seed in rows early spring and autumn, thin to 10cm. Price:
